WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

UNI (pronounced “U and I”) is dedicated to the vision that within the next several years, the nuclear industry will have: preserved our current fleet; created sustainability through improved efficiency and reduced costs of generating nuclear power; created new and innovative approaches to deploying new nuclear domestically and globally; and reenergized member ability to more effectively compete domestically and globally.

UNI is open to membership by the entire US nuclear industry community: all US companies, government agencies, universities and organizations.

The US nuclear industry is currently at a significant disadvantage within the world nuclear market, competing against foreign subsidies, foreign unfair competition practices, and exclusionary foreign nuclear market alliances.

UNI will aggressively work with local, state, and federal government, and the industry to facilitate the development, continued use and future development projects for nuclear power. UNI works to find ways to enhance and improve relationships and infrastructure/activities between utilities and suppliers, to bring about better communication and collaboration, and increasing supply chain effectiveness by unlocking innovation through supplier consortia teams to develop creative solutions for nuclear science and technology challenges. UNI will work with local, state, and federal government leaders who support nuclear power, and work to remove legislative, regulatory, and policy roadblocks.

The plan will also include increasing US Government support and involvement, and working to solve the important regulatory burden issues:
• Working to increase US Government support for R&D, such as large-scale investments for US advantage: studies; pilot/demonstration plants; and advanced reactors.
• Creating advanced US Government strategies for America such as spent fuel take-back (like Russia), financing offers (like China) through EX-IM Bank, and improving export laws.
• Increasing supply chain effectiveness by unlocking innovation through supplier consortia teams to solve nuclear science and technology gaps. In addition, to improve US industry visibility, UNI will provide an updated catalog of US Suppliers and capabilities.
• Improve export control regulation effectiveness.
• Create a paradigm shift in the US regulatory process and licensing reviews.

UNI will also develop a plan for growing the US nuclear business both domestically and globally. This plan will include such considerations as:
• Establish a global market intelligence collaboration with US Government agencies, and global members on global opportunities, and to cover/report on selective conferences. Achieve better information flow (gathered, assessed, and shared), and provide the US Government (State Department and Commerce Department) with a “point-of-contact” for dissemination of global nuclear business opportunities. Develop collaboration between the US Government and US industry in targeting and marketing opportunities. Improve the success of future trade missions by active UNI participation in trade and marketing strategies.
• Work to create a global market “product differentiation” motto that “If you want it done right – buy American” emphasizing that the US nuclear industry “DNA” is Quality, Quality, Quality (On-Schedule, On-Budget, and Honor Commitments).
If a quality-affecting defect in a safety-related design or a safety-related component were identified internally in Russia or China, do you really believe those governments would even notify owners/operators?
• Work with US Government (Congress and Agencies) to analyze foreign competitive export strategies (China, Russia, Korea, Japan, Canada, France): note how China & Russia got their way in the UK, Argentina, Turkey, Pakistan; note the effective unity of the Korean Industry in UAE. Establish reasonable targets for country/product exports, and American content versus local content.
• Establish working groups to target and coordinate/prioritize selected areas for development where a semi-level playing field already exists: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; India; Poland; and South Africa.
• Improve competitive strategies such as: US EX-IM Bank support for nuclear power deals and US content.
